Everyone who belongs to a teaching profession wants to improve his/her presentation skills in class. Especially, the newly appointed academics are curious to know specific these skills. They want to make their lecture exciting. They want to move all the knowledge fully to the students.
What is a Lecture?
A lecture is a way of teaching in which the main pivot is the teacher who imparts his learning experiences to his students. Direct interaction can be seen between a teacher and the students during the lecture. A face to face chance to learn from each other provides a fantastic opportunity to understand the topic of the subject. For the very day when a concept came into human minds to teach others, the lecture was the first mode to impart teaching. Since that time lecture is widely used as a trick to teach individuals or groups. In a classroom environment, a tool that shows the real capabilities and the capacities of the teacher is a lecture. We can regard a lecture as a scale of competencies of a teacher.
What are the basic requirements of a good lecture?
Teaching demands full enthusiasm and motivation from teachers and academics. Focus is a vital prerequisite for this purpose. A teacher must preplan the requirements needed to make his lecture successful before he/she enters the classroom. A well-prepared lecture brings confidence for a teacher.
Steps To Be Taken Before Entering The Class
I would like to mention here some steps which every teacher should ensure before entering the teaching space to carry a valued lecture. By following these steps hopefully, you will be successful.
An advance visit to the class: will provide you with an overall layout. You would be able to judge the environment. You would feel the necessary things that are needed during the lecture.
Back-up Planning: you should have a back-up plan in case a technical failure of the audio-visual, computer or electrical gadgets.
Plan your Lecture and Visual-Aids beforehand: You should know how will you introduce and explain the topic. What summary will you put and how you will conclude the topic.
Speaking Notes: You should have notes (outline, major key points, examples and reference materials) with you, which could help you to make your lecture an authentic one.
Include delivery reminder cues in your notes: You must include the delivery reminder cues to your note to make your more effective like a smile, look to the whole class and pause during the lecture.
Do Practice the Lecture: Practice the lecture sufficient. Put deliverable materials in the notes which you could manage in lecture time. Remove the common errors. You should have a full idea about of time which will be spent by the students in questioning.
Take a Bottle of Water: Take a bottle of water with you to relax your dry throat. Have a sip during the repose of a student.
Effective Presentation Strategies
Eye Contact: Always maintain eye contact with the whole class.
Don’t Turn Face: Always remain in face to face position. The student will be more attentive and conscious in this way.
Use of Micro-Phone: If there is a large use of micro-phone to covey your lectures till the last student.
Speak Clearly: Speak clearly so your every word could be conveyed easily.
Lecturing Guidelines
Preparation
Prepare well the topic of your intention. Read each and every side of the topic. Intensive readings will do well. All the basic concepts must be cleared. Collect knowledge from different platforms to have authenticity.
Keep Your Focus
Collect all your information in mind. Immediately observe the student's attention. Give an expression that you are ready and focused. If you can prepare the students to listen to you, you are in the right way.
Basic Presentation Skills
A cool and polite way of talking is the authenticity of the ever good impression of you upon your class. Each word should be clearly listenable. Voice must be reachable to the last student.
Engage your Audience
Don’t just speak. You must take notice of the mental and physical presence of each participant during your lecture. Take a pause, discuss any general issue, do some joke, take the attention of the participants to some burning issue. This engagement of the audience from you will work and every student having any specific personal intentions and priorities will be attentive.
Get Feedback
You can easily ask the class if the*y are getting interested or feeling some boredom. Take an opinion about your methodology. In the end, try to feel them you are at the same level. Catch the comments and suggestions of students. This is most important for your personal grooming.
Handling Questions
Openly invite the students to ask any questions. Don’t say just “any question”. You should always ask standing steady and coming to a few steps towards the students. “Should I repeat the summary of the topic, “Do you need any explanation”? Give some time to students so that they remind the topic recently covered and can ask a question which is still needed to be explained. Do not bluff if you don’t know the answer to the question.
Handouts
You should have with you shareable data and notes. Always invite them to copy the notes. Students can take assistance at any time of their comfort.
